Age range of volunteers

Adult volunteers enjoy giving back in a meaningful way, meeting new people, and staying active in their community. By greeting patients, supporting families, or lending a hand to caregivers, your presence helps create a caring and positive environment, and is an opportunity to share your life experiences while making a positive difference.

College student volunteers gain valuable experience in a healthcare setting while strengthening their resume or application for graduate programs. Benefits include insights into patient care and hospital operations, while building connections with mentors and healthcare professionals. It’s a rewarding way to grow your skills while serving others.

High school student volunteers can explore future careers in healthcare while practicing responsibility and compassion. You’ll earn community service hours, meet new friends, and develop skills that look great on college applications. Most importantly, you can play a role in helping families feel supported during their hospital visits.
I want to give whatever I can to other patients who went through what I went through, and give them hope, a smile, a hug, and whatever else I can do to help them.

Please note: Additional requirements may vary by department or volunteer role.
Volunteers bring comfort, care, and connection to every corner of Memorial Healthcare System. Depending on interests and availability, volunteers may:
Start times vary based on program availability, onboarding requirements, and application volume. On average, placement may take 1-2 weeks after all steps are completed.
Yes. Due to high demand—especially during peak periods like summer—a waitlist may be in place. We strongly recommend applying early to increase your chances of placement.
The Volunteer Program does not include clinical internships or job shadowing. For those opportunities, please contact our Workforce Development Department at WorkforceDevelopment@mhs.net
If you plan to volunteer during the summer, please submit your application at least 6 months in advance, as it is our busiest season and spots fill quickly. Summer-only participants should be prepared to volunteer two to three shifts per week to meet program requirements. Summer-only applicants will not be considered after July 1.
Volunteering does not guarantee employment, but it provides valuable experience, skill development, and professional connections. Volunteers who demonstrate exceptional commitment may be eligible for referrals or recommendations from their Volunteer Specialist when applying for open positions.
We supply a volunteer jacket or polo and a badge. Volunteers are required to wear khaki pants and closed-toe shoes during their shift.
If you’re retired from Memorial, get up off your couch and give in a different way. When you volunteer, you get so much more back by giving. You see smiles on people’s faces, and they’re so grateful for any little thing that you do for them.
Meet some of the individuals who selflessly give back to our healthcare system's patients, families, and healthcare providers.
Volunteers are an important part of the Memorial family. In addition to making a meaningful difference for our patients, families, and care teams, our volunteers have access to programs designed to recognize their contributions, support their goals, and create a rewarding experience. We are proud to celebrate the individuals who generously give their time to serve our community.
Memorial offers scholarship opportunities to graduating high school volunteers who demonstrate dedication, compassion, and a commitment to serving others. These scholarships help support their educational goals and recognize volunteers who consistently make a positive impact throughout our hospitals and facilities.
These scholarships are made possible by the generous contributions from the Medical Executive Committee.
The Volunteer Explorer Program provides high school juniors and seniors interested in healthcare careers with the opportunity to gain valuable exposure to a hospital environment. Participants explore different areas of care while developing professional skills, building confidence, and learning from experienced healthcare teams.
The Volunteer Spotlight Award recognizes volunteers who go above and beyond in their service. These individuals demonstrate exceptional dedication, compassion, and commitment to supporting our patients, visitors, and staff. Spotlight recipients are recognized for the meaningful difference they make throughout Memorial.
Throughout the year, Memorial hosts appreciation events and celebrations to thank our volunteers for the time, energy, and compassion they bring to our organization. These gatherings provide opportunities for volunteers to connect, celebrate milestones, and be recognized for their service.
Volunteers receive a complimentary meal ticket for every four-hour volunteer shift, which can be used in our hospital cafeterias.
To make volunteering as convenient as possible, Memorial provides free parking at our facilities for all volunteers during their scheduled shifts.
