Business of Medicine Series
An 8-day longitudinal “Business of Medicine” seminar series preparing MHS trainees for modern medical practice.
The MHS Graduate Medical Education department is pleased to provide a longitudinal curriculum for trainees aimed at developing the skills needed for their future practice of medicine. The curriculum is an 6-day seminar series entitled “Business of Medicine.“ Trainees will participate in this longitudinal curriculum across their first 3 years of training at MHS.
The curriculum is divided into the following domains:
- Healthcare Quality & Cost
- Physicians as Leaders
- Physician Wellbeing
The content was chosen from surveys and interviews with various GME vested parties, including the trainees themselves, healthcare executives, and allied health professionals. Content varies from year to year as needed. We are proud to be able to offer this innovative series and prepare our trainees to practice 21st-century medicine.

Making Use of Library Resources
Trainees are introduced to resources in the MHS Knowledge Services Library as well as the FIU School of Medicine Library.
Mission Statement
Trainees develop their own personalized mission statements.
Residents/Fellows as Teachers
Trainees learn to teach in the clinical setting. This session is modeled after the Stanford faculty development course in improving clinical teaching skills.
Scholarly Activity Tips
Trainees are taught tips for completing scholarly activity during residency, including developing research ideas, preparing for projects, project management, and writing considerations.
Resident/Fellow Research Panel
Trainees hear from colleagues about best practices and useful tips for completing scholarly activity during residency.
Science of Learning and Teaching
Trainees learn and teach each other about foundational pedagogical principles and their applications.
BCMA
Trainees learn about opportunities with the Broward County Medical Association.
Wellbeing
Painting with a Twist
Trainees have fun while painting a work of art by following the instructions of the group artist.
Exercise Away Your Workday
Trainees participate in an exercise class, learning ergodynamics and exercises to support long-term physical health.
Healthcare Quality and Cost
Imaging Wisely
Trainees take a deep dive into the appropriate use of imaging tests, a major contributor to rising healthcare cost and radiation exposure. This session applies Choosing Wisely principles to radiology orders.
The Patient Experience & Why It Matters
Trainees learn how Press Ganey measures patient satisfaction and how the patient experience impacts hospital rating scores and physician reimbursement.
Healthcare Access Challenge
Trainees learn how healthcare access impacts the delivery of care.
Quality Improvement
Trainees learn the process of performing quality improvement projects to improve patient and population health.
Healthcare Insurance and Reimbursement
Trainees learn the fundamentals of insurance in the United States and how their work translates into hospital and physician reimbursement.
Residents as Leaders
The Successful Job Application
Trainees learn best practices for applying and negotiating for their next job after training.
Wellbeing
Professional Identity Formation Mask Activity
Trainees create masks as visual representations of their professional identities portrayed externally and lived internally.
Processing Death
Trainees learn the importance of emotionally processing death and hear from physicians about how they have navigated this throughout their careers.
Personal Finances 101
Trainees learn the basics of budgeting and managing finances during this stage of their careers, while also planning for the future.
The Impaired Physician
Trainees learn about risk factors and warning signs of physician substance use and available resources for help.

Trainees read and analyze hospital bills from actual MHS patients, reflecting on common hospital service charges and their role in managing healthcare costs.
Ethics and Medical History
Trainees learn about physician behaviors throughout the history of medicine.
Ethics and Medicine
Trainees learn foundational ethical principles, apply them using real-life cases, and explore how religion and spirituality intersect with ethical decision-making.
Residents as Leaders
Conflict Management
Trainees learn best practices in managing conflict, including barriers, phases, types of conflict, and effective approaches to resolution.
Introduction to CVs
Trainees are introduced to the uses of CVs and evaluate their own or a colleague’s CV using a checklist of best practices.
The Job Hunt
Trainees learn about finding a job through insights from a panel of recent graduates and experienced physicians.
Leading a Team Panel
Trainees hear from colleagues about best practices and the realities and responsibilities of leading a patient care team as a trainee.

Trainees learn about risk factors, warning signs of burnout, and available resources for support.
Coaching Tools for Physician Wellbeing

Managing Debt Burden
